New Years Resolutions

Last post I talked about new school year resolutions. Did you manage to keep yours through the first week? I know I didn’t.

I resolved to be more organized. The war zone on my desk tells me this didn’t happen.

I resolved to delegate more (I am very lucky to have 2 aides). The Type A in my personality did not let this happen.

I resolved to be stricter in some areas and more lenient in others. I’ve kinda kept this one, but we’ll see. (Stricter in procedures, I’m pre-k so line ups, walking in the hallway, sitting at circle, etc. and more lenient in what we build, how the puppet shows go, how we play etc.)

The great thing about resolutions though, is that as long as you keep trying I don’t think you can really fail at your resolution. I will continue to work to be more organized. It’s hard in the first week with form after form coming in, new students being added, lists being made, keeping track of who brought what and where it ended up, but that doesn’t mean that next week isn't new and I won’t keep trying.

I like my control and I like doing things myself, but I need to learn that I can’t do it all alone. I need to look to others to help, and I am blessed with a couple of amazing aides, who I work really well with, and one who is almost able to anticipate what I might need or want done before I have to ask. But I need to trust them more, and give them more responsibilities, they are there to help me, and I need to realize that.

This was only the first week, and I’m sure that as the year progresses, I will make progress on these resolutions and perhaps some new ones.

Why is it that we relegate resolutions to once a year anyways? Nothing magical changes in January, or September, or really any other time of year. Why not make a resolution to keep working towards goals no matter what time of year it is?

For now though, I am off to rest. Working with little guys like I do, means there’s no shortage of germs to be exposed to and I feel a cold coming on. Plus, as they say “There’s no tired like first week back to school teacher tired”
